Moonlight Bath, a Loy Krathong Tradition of Sukhothai
“Belief’ has stayed with Thai people’s life styles for more than a century. Therefore, there are many ceremonies in all festivals along the year. One of which is the “Moonlight bathing” ceremony during Loy Kratong festival every year.
The ceremony started with the belief that showering from natural water from rivers or canals in the full moon night will enhance one’s life with the moonlight power getting rid of all dirty and bad parts of our bodies. In present days, there are a few temples that the monks perform this ceremony for people in the area. In some places, there will be a string connecting the water from the container to everyone in the ceremony wishing everyone a good and happy life.
The ceremony is normally performed at midnight of the full-moon night when the moon hit the maximum power.
The ceremony may be old-fashion but it does reflect the belief of Thai people who always respect the power of mother nature to guide them to the success of their life.
